No doubt about it: Anne Hathaway looked gorgeous at the Academy Awards, where she tookhome the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Les Misérables. But thanks to her pale pink gown (and some unfortunate darts), her nipples took center stage. Within minutes of Hathaway appearance on the small screen, a Twitter-happy viewer created the [email protected] and tweeted and "It an honor to be considered this year @AngiesRightLeg," referring to Angelina Jolie awkward poses during the 2012 broadcast that launched a thousand memes. Most women have probably felt the eyes of the world directed at their, ahem, upstanding citizens—and they likely didn have a giant gold statuette to hide behind. Senior Fashion Editor Thea Palad suggests you consider these 3 factors to help keep your nips where they belong when you re in public: out of sight.

1. Fabric Choice

Anything light, thin, fitted, or clingy can act like a sartorial high-beam switch Palad says. If it fits like a wet t-shirt—you in danger, girl. It’s safer to go with darker colors, substantial textiles (e.g. linen or wool over silk or polyester), small prints, and flowy fits.

2. Bra Selection

Always go for a T-shirt bra or a contoured bra—both have a foam lining (not padding, mind you) which really helps," Palad says.T-shirt bras are seamless so you’ll get a smoother look; structured contour bras are composed of multiple pieces so you’ll have a seam on the cup, but you can line these up with your nipples for even more coverage.Additionally, most adhesive bras are made out of contoured foam or silicone, so Anne couldhave literally covered both bases (support and modesty) with a backless, sideless sticky bra she says.

3. Accessories, a.k.a. the supporting cast

There are a variety of products with which to cover your nipples, from petals (flesh-toned, flower-shaped adhesives) to silicone gelpads (these come sticky or plain) Palad says. "In a pinch, you can also use bandaids, surgical tape, or panty liners (cut in half and attached to the inside of your bra).
